Telnet handler configuration for Windows 10

This procedure involves manually editing your systems registry! You should only attempt this if you are comfortable with working with the Windows registry.

I ACCEPT NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU SCREW UP YOUR COMPUTER.
YOU FOLLOW THIS PROCEDURE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

When trying to fire up a telnet session from a link on a webpage I would get a dialog box asking if I wanted to use the default handler. If I clicked OK to this the dialog box dissappeared and nothing else happened. After doing a bit of research I eventually found the solution. I have documented that solution here. It works for me on my Windows 10 laptop. It may or may not work for you.

The basic procedure was to modify the registry entry for the telnet class default command (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\telnet\shell\open\command)

On my PC there was a String value (REG_SZ) Called “(Default)” that was set to:

"C:\Windows\System32\rundll32.exe" "C:\Windows\System32\url.dll", TelnetProtocolHandler %l.

To use NetRunner I needed to change this to:

C:\Program Files (x86)\NetRunner\netrunner.exe %l

you will probably need to substitute “C:\Program Files (x86)\Netrunner” for the path to your NetRunner installtion. Also note that the l in %l is a lowercase L.

If you want to use PuTTY as your terminal client then the value is:

{path to your PuTTY installation}\putty.exe -telnet %l

If you decide to make this change to your registry I hope it works OK for you. If this works for you then drop me an email (Colin@TheOldMillBBS.com) to let me know your setup (Windows version, telnet client, browser etc.). If your having problems with this procedure you can also drop me an email but I can't promise that I will be able to help.
